Havasu 4 Wheeler club members rescued a stranded man Thursday after they heard a faint yell for help in the distance.

Bruce Speirs, past president of the club, said about 15 club members were out for a routine Jeep run when they stopped out in the desert. "Off in the distance they could hear 'help, help, help' and someone noticed a man out in the desert running toward them," Speirs said.
Speirs stated in an email to Today's News-Herald the man told club members he was alone and went exploring when his older-model Chevy Blazer rolled over onto its roof.
The site of the rollover was near Jupiter Mines, four miles away from where the group discovered the man. Club members, led by longtime member Dave Opperman, responded and used their vehicles and winches to right the toppled truck. The members then towed the truck 10 miles to the Standard Wash kiosk south of Lake Havasu City.
The unidentified driver-in-distress told the club members he was from Cave Creek, Ariz., and on his way to Seattle, Wash., when he stopped in the area to do some off-road exploring.
"Go in a group, there's safety in numbers," Speirs said. "He was very lucky. One, he wasn't killed (when the vehicle rolled over) and two, he was able to find help and wasn't injured on the hike out."
In the email, Speirs also stated it's a good idea to always have a second vehicle along during excursions, to let someone know of your travel plans and provide an anticipated time of return.
"For this young visitor it turned out well," Speirs stated in the email. "But had he been farther out and the weather worse, he may not have (fared) so well."

Havasu 4-Wheelers Welcome 2012
The Havasu 4-Wheelers got together on Saturday, January 14th to celebrate a year of 4-wheeling fun. We have been working hard on the pending BLM travel management plan, cleaning up the desert, helping ranchers, fencing off mines, and exploring off road trails near and far. This was a fun and racous evening which opened with a poker run, hula hoop and limbo contests. Who knew our members were so talented? Between dinner courses the entire room was surprised when a flash mob showed up to dance. The seeminly came from nowhere, appearing throughout the room and finally coming together on the dance floor to rousing applause and a standing ovation. Thanks to Sandy Webber from bringing her dance team to our event! After dinner and the winners of the contests were announced we recognized the 28 trail bosses who led the 127 runs during 2011. These trail bosses are what makes our activities possible. Without them there would be no runs and thus no Havasu 4-Wheelers. I would be remiss if it didn’t name them all so, leading between 1-4 runs were B.J. Buckhout, Gary Bullard, Bob Carson, Rodger Delk, Bob Drew, Don Flood, Sue Guibord, Darryld Kautzmann, Rick Keil, Dennis Kruezenstein, Mike MacLean, Richard Marchus, Dave Opperman, Steve Riley, Bob Scholl, Kathlyn Speirs, Bruce Speirs, Dick Thomas, Gary Wiskus and Mike Yahrmarkt. Leading 5-9 runs were Tom Bunnell, Charles Leipart, Willie Williams, Snake Williams and Ladell Olson. And the most active trail bosses were Andy Lucas with 10 runs, John Strong with 12 runs and the king of the hill is Jim Bowen leading an extrodinary 20 runs during 2011. I, the President was thrilled to receive a President’s jacket presented by Past President Bruce Speirs. For me, the highlight of the evening was the honor in presenting the 4-Wheeler of the Year award to Ladell Olson.

The membership has voted on a person who is truly deserving of the title 4-wheeler of the year.
Ladell probably loves jeeping more than anything except his wife and family, and always with his wife right there with him. Judy is a real sport, especially considering their Jeep is in her name! I would almost say that Ladell would rather go 4-wheeling than eat…well almost.
He’s the guy you want on a run with you. Always ready willing and able to help, he goes out of his way to lend assistance anywhere it is needed. If you’re broken down, he’ll get you off the trail. If you’re stuck, he’ll get you out. And if he’s not around, he can even talk you through a problem over the phone. Ladell is the one always there when someone has tipped, flipped, flopped or otherwise turned over, ready to get that poor someone back on all fours and running again. As we like to say…don’t leave home without your Ladell, your 4-wheeler of the year!
